In which I do not have nice things to say about the season finale.

Okay, but really!? What was the fucking point of making a big exposition of sending Clara through the Doctor’s timeline if the Doctor was just going to follow through? If he can casually do that, what is keeping him from New York, hence what the hell was the point of all that melodrama in “The Angels Take Manhattan”!?

Furthermore, what kind of bullshit was Trenzalore? Seriously, that’s what we got after the huge hype from Series 6? “The question” being asked in the background while everyone was screaming?

How did the Great Intelligence even get there? We don’t know. How did it acquire a small army of golems (for lack of a better term)? We don’t know. Is Clara still strung out across the Doctor’s time stream or did he nullify that by throwing himself in? If he did, how is the Great Intelligence going to be stopped from ruining everything? If he didn’t, then how did Clara get there (wherever “there” is) alive and well and not killed by being strung out across the Doctor’s time stream?

And as much as I like River, you can’t convince me she’s this great, all-important person in the Doctor’s life and has this wonderful story for the ages if its constantly being butchered. If she’s constantly relegated to the position of cheerleader. If the Doctor always has to make some grand gesture and kiss her so he can convince her to do what he wants her to do. If her “big secret” turns out to be being the child of his companion. If she for some inane reason falls head over heels for him before actually meeting him, then spending the rest of her life chasing the idea of him she has in her head and constantly being disappointed.

I just….ugh. Moffat is a fucking idiot. He thinks wrapping some semblance of a plot line into some vague pretzel shape is a substitute for good writing. He thinks if he can get the viewers confused enough and provide a lot of shiny, flashy visuals with epic music in the background it will distract from his gaping plot holes and the fact that he very clearly has no idea what the hell he’s doing. He over-hypes all his work to the extreme, then fails to deliver when he is supposed to. How the hell people are able to take him seriously, I don’t even know.

Will someone please direct me to a show that is written by people who actually know how to fucking write. Jesus Christ.

So what I got from that finale was a series of cop-outs to end all cop-outs.

Wow. Just wow. You know, writers, throwing the most cosmic scenarios you can think of out there to racket up the tension x10 billion and try and boost your ratings doesn’t make up for bad writing. Or random character reversals. Or character stagnation and a fundamental misunderstanding (or even worse, refusal to acknowledge) of who that character actually is and what their motivations are. Or ruining the best fucking villain the show had. Or completely ignoring conversations that happened literally one episode ago.

Ugh. It could have been worse, I guess, but more than anything it reminded me of how much this isn’t the show I fell in love with last year.

Danish scientists believe they may have a cure for HIV “within months.”

Researchers at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark are testing a new technique that involves flushing the virus from so-called reservoirs in human DNA.

The virus is then destroyed naturally by the body’s immune system, The London Telegraph reported.

They are expecting results to show that “finding a mass-distributable and affordable cure to HIV is possible”.

Fifteen patients are taking part in the trials, funded with $2.1 million from the Danish Research Council.

If they are found to have successfully been cured of HIV, the new technique will be tested on a wider scale.

Any cure would be affordable for many of the 33 million people worldwide afflicted by the virus.

However, despite the trials Dr. Ole Sogaard, a senior researcher in the department of infectious disease warned that the efficacy in the human body remained unproven.

Medical Daily quoted him as telling the media:

“The challenge will be getting the patients’ immune system to recognize the virus and destroy it. This depends on the strength and sensitivity of individual immune systems.”

British researchers are reportedly conducting similar research through a consortium of five universities.

Both studies are aiming to find a cure for those already infected with the virus and would not result in a preventative measure for HIV or AIDS.

As with many articles purporting possible cures it’s always good to take these with a grain of salt and practice our skepticism until the results and stats are weighed in. But if it’s anything close to being true then I am glad to see this progressing into a challenge of engineering the proper tools to fight it rather than how to fight it. Let’s hope this is followed up with success.
